1,242,123. Cutting by laser beam. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 10 Nov., 1969 [12 Nov., 1968], No. 53647/68. Headings B4B and B5L. An apparatus for cutting a combustible workpiece, e.g. of wood, fabric or paper, comprises a laser 10, a tube 26 housing optical means for focusing the laser beam 24 on to the workpiece, a cutting head 28 into which an inert gas, e.g. air, argon or nitrogen is fed through an inlet 38 in order that the gas can be directed at the workpiece, and means 40, 42, 44 for introducing into the gas stream an atomized stream of liquid coolant. The liquid, e.g. water, is contained in a bottle 40 clamped to the head 28 so that it flows, via a valve 42 and an atomizing nozzle 44, to the underside of a nozzle 46 on the head. In operation, the workpiece is fed past the cutting head by means of rollers 50 driven by a motor 52. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 993,705.
|
