摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine, which prevents lowering in the starting performance of an associated engine without requiring complicated control and piping. SOLUTION: A high-pressure fuel pump 11 in a high-pressure fuel injection system 10 comprises a cylinder 20, a plunger 21 adapted to reciprocate in the cylinder 20, and a pressurized chamber 22 defined by the cylinder 20 and the plunger 21. The pressurized chamber 22 is connected to a fuel tank 13 by way of an inflow passage 30, which is provided with a low-pressure feed pump 14 and a spill valve 41. The pressurized chamber 22 is also connected to a fuel distribution pipe 55 by way of a feed passage 35, which is provided with a check valve 36. An ECU 60 controls the opening or closing timing of the spill valve 41 to thereby control the quantity of fuel that the pressurized chamber 22 feeds into the fuel distribution pipe 55. In that case, the pressure of fuel fed into the pressurized chamber 22 is made higher than the pressure required for opening the check valve 36.
