A method (A) of synthesising alkyl tert. alkyl ethers comprises contacting t. butanol and an alkanol in molar amts. 10:1 to 1:10 at 1 atmos. to 1000 psig pressure, 20-2500 C. with beta zeolite modified with one or more metals from both gp. IA and gp. IIIB. Also claimed is a method (B) of synthesising alkyl tert. alkyl ethers by contacting t. butanol and an alkanol in molar amts. 10:1 to 1:10 at 50-500 psig. 80-2000 C., with beta zeolite modified with hexamethylenedisiloxane, triethylsilyl chloride or phosphorus pentoxide.
