Disclosed is a method for protecting metal surfaces against corrosion in liquid, aqueous, non-aqueous or gaseous media, characterized in that compounds of formula (I) are added to the media, whereby in formula (I) the radicals R<1>, R<2> and R<3> mean individually an alkyl or hydroxy alkyl radical with 1 to 4 C atoms, an alkyl or alkyl aryl radical or a radical of formula (II), in which n stands for 2 or 3, p is 1 to 3 and R<5> means an alkyl or alkenyl radical with 7 to 23 C atoms and 0, 1, 2 or 3 double bonds, A<-> represents an anion, and R<4> means a radical of formula (II) or formula (III), wherein R<1>, R<2> and R<3> have the above-cited meaning and Z stands for a group (CH2)m- or a group of formula (IV) where m represents a whole number between one and 6, X is a group NH or oxygen and D means a dimer fatty acid radical with in average 36 to 54 C atoms.
