A toy construction system includes a plurality of substantially flat, interlocking cards (10, 30) which can be used by children to build three-dimensional toy structures. The cards are preferably printed and die cut from plastic laminate film to form flexible cards having colorful designs. Each card is polygon-shaped with at least three straight edges (32, 34, 36) having substantially the same length (e.g., square or equilateral triangle). It is preferred to mix cards of various shapes and sizes to provide variety for children using the cards to build three-dimensional toy structures. Each straight edge on each card has either a tab (20) extending outwardly from the edge, or a slit (78) in the card parallel and adjacent the edge for inter-connecting the card with other cards of the same or different shape. The interconnection between cards preferably permits a flexible pivot between the cards which allows the formation of extendable chain (62) of cards that may be reused by children, and may be easily stored by stacking one card on top of another without disconnecting the chain of cards.
