1342081 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 8176/70 Heading A3B In a toe end lasting machine of the type including a set of grippers for tensioning the upper about the last and a pair of wipers which initially occupy a remote position to facilitate the placing of a shoe in the machine and the introduction of the lasting margin into the jaws of the grippers and are moved to an operative position adjacent the shoe prior to the actual inwiping operation, the movement of the wipers to their operative position is arranged to take place at the same time as the tensioning action of the grippers. As described the control circuit of the toe end lasting machine described in Specification 1010149 is modified so that the downwiping stroke of the wipers is omitted and the wipers move to their operative position at the same time as the grippers operate. The control circuit may also include a selector switch. In a first position of the selector switch depression of a treadle causes the grippers to perform their tensioning operation and the wipers to move to their operative position. Release of the treadle then causes a toe pad to be applied. The operator can then correct the position of the upper on the last if necessary. A second depression of the treadle then causes the machine to complete its cycle. In the second position of the selector switch release of the treadle causes the toe pad to be applied and the completion of the machine cycle without pausing for the operator to effect any correction of the pulling action of the grippers.
