Halovinyl ethers of formula R-(A<1>-Z<1>)l-(A<2>-Z<2>)m-A<3>-(CH2)n-O-CH=C(X<1>)(X<2>) (I) are new; in which R = 1-12 carbon (C) alk(en)yl, in which one or more methylene (CH2) groups may be replaced by ether (O), difluoromethane (CF2) or ethenylene (-CH=CH-) groups or 1 or 2 CH groups may be replaced by CF, without adjacent O atoms; A<1>, A<2>, A<3> = (a) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, in which 1 or more non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by -O- and/or sulphur (-S-), (b) 1,4-phenylene, in which 1 or 2 CH groups may be replaced by nitrogen (N), (c) 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)-octylene, piperidin-1,4-diyl, naphthalen-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl, (d) 1,4-cyclohexenylene and groups (a), (b) and (d) may be mono- or di-substituted by chlorine (Cl) or fluorine (F); Z<1>, Z<2> = -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -CH2O-, -O-CH2-, -CH2CH2, -CH=CH-, -C?=C- or a single bond; X<1>, X<2> = hydrogen H, Cl or F; l, m = 0, 1 or 2; l+m /- 1; n = 1, 2 or 3. Also claimed are liquid crystalline (LC) media with >= 2 LC components, which contain compound(s) (I).
