PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a composite layer film of thick film thickness and of superior resistance to chipping, whiteness pearl-like glossy feeling, color tone stability and the like. SOLUTION: When a prime coating material A, an intercoating material B, a colored base coating material C, a clear pearl tone base coating material D and a clear coating material E are applied successively on a base to form a composite layer film, a liquid thermosetting coating material containing very fine aluminum powder having average particle diameter of less than 10μm of 0.1-30 pts.wt. and a titanium oxide pigment of 1-200 pts.wt. to a thermosetting resin composition of 100 pts.wt. and having the masking force of the film of 25μm or less is used as the coating material B, and a coating material for which the Munsell color chart of a film to be formed is adjusted in the range of N7-N9 by blending a titanium white pigment with aluminum flakes is used as the colored base coating material C, and also a white pearl tone or a silver pearl tone coating material containing scaly mica powder coated with the titanium oxide is used as the pearl tone base coating material D.
