The simulator for training a cyclist is fitted with a standard road bicycle (27) and comprises a support (24) in which the rear end of the bicycle is supported to allow the cyclist to pedal on the spot. The rear wheel of the bicycle engages a braking system (1,2) which allows the simulation of the bicycle travelling over a specific course. A video sequence is prepared for display to the cyclist showing the view seen as the cyclist travels along the course. The information stored on a CD ROM is used to control a computer display screen (6A). The braking applied to the bicycle is dependent on the slope of the ground over which the simulated course runs, and an electric fan generates a current of air past the rider in order to simulate the effect of speed. A further display records the distance covered and the details of the cyclist's performance, for display on the screen.
