The differential has a drive shaft (2) which is coaxial with the two output shafts (3) and is rigidly joined to at least one differential bolt (4), so as to drive the two shafts via bevel gears (5) and shaft gears (6). Each bevel gear is supported by a disc (7) which is joined to the differential bolt. The drive shaft may be inserted in a bolt that has an internal profile or vice versa, with the drive shaft being led through both output shafts and the bolt (4). Alternatively, the differential bolt may be formed as a three or multi-pointed star so as to carry the bevel gears. The bolt may be arranged at any other angle than 90 deg relative to the drive axis so that the mounted bevel gears engage shaft gears of dissimilar size. The bolt may be Ni-plated to prevent it seizing the bevel gears, and the tooth engagement between the bevel gears and the discs may be adjusted by interposed plastics shim plates or plates of nitrided steel with vulcanised plastics.
