A wave motion energy harvesting apparatus (10) of the invention comprises a float portion (26) detachably interfitted with an axially moveable with respect to a hydrodynamically resistive portion (38). The float portion (26) is moored by means of a line (30) attached adjacent its vertical axis (36), but the hydrodynamically resistive portion (38) is neither anchored nor moored except by its being interfitted with the float portion (26). Both the float and the hydrodynamically resistive portions are separately configured to have their mass distributed evenly about a common vertical axis (36) of the apparatus. The float portion (26) of the apparatus (10) is nearly neutrally buoyant and comprises an automatically filled water ballast tank (46).
