Superabsorbent polymers

Super-absorbent polymers (A) based upon partially hydrolysed, high mol.wt., linear acrylonitrile homo- or copolymers in which 30-60 mol.% nitrile gps. have been converted into carboxylate gps. 20-60 mol.% nitrile gps. have been converted into carbonamide gps. and 10-20 mol.% nitrile gps. are unchanged. The non-cross linked polymer has a swellability of up to 1000 g/g in water and up to 90 g/g in physiological cooking salt soln.. The prepn. of(A) is also claimed.
