The invention relates to a method and a device for sterilizing medical instruments, wherein the instruments to be sterilized are placed in a container and are fed to a treatment apparatus in which the following procedural steps in a preselectable process take place automatically: feeding of the closed container to a reception area having a deposit surface; recognition of the type of container by means of an adequate recognition system and opening of the container; removal and disposal of eventually contaminated consumables; cleaning and drying the container and the instruments and accessories; replenishing the container with new consumables; sterilization of the replenished container, and conducting the same to a delivery area where the sterile containers are provisionally stored and can be removed manually.
