The gas or liquid is mixed with a luminescent substance (B), which the pulsed laser beams along the structure under investigation cause to luminesce periodically. This produces light beams (D) whose path can be recorded by video cameras (A1,A2) as the fluid moves. Synchronisation signals from one camera (A1), or generated externally, with selectable delays are used to trigger the laser pulses. To record both the instant and the displaced beam, the laser can be triggered twice during each video frame. A holographically recorded frame may be projected into the flow region and recorded simultaneously.
