The invention relates to a method of operating an internal combustion engine, or an internal combustion engine. According to the inventive method of operation, fuel is injected into a combustion chamber in such a way that it is reflected on a piston. A stratified charge thus arises in the combustion chamber. Choked or unchoked fresh air is sucked into the combustion chamber independent from the load condition of the combustion engine, so that the combustion gas from the previous working cycle is completely expelled from the combustion chamber. Combustion engine power output is substantially produced via the injected quantity of fuel. The inventive method enables a stratified charge, ideal for the combustion of air/fuel mixture, to be obtained. As a result, the internal combustion engine disclosed in the invention runs quietly at ideal combustion gas values.
