NEW MATERIAL:A 2,6-xylenol dimer mono- or di-ether compound of formula (R1 is isopropyl or benzyl; R2 is H or same as R1). EXAMPLE:4,4-diisopropoxy-3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl. USE:Useful as a repellent for cockroach, etc. It is scattered in the path, etc., of smoky brown cockroach, aphid, etc., or used in the form bonded to a sheet, etc., with a binder. It has repelling effect against hygienic vermin. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be produced e.g. by heating 1mol of 2,6-xylenol dimer (4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-biphenyl) and 1-2mol of isopropyl halide or benzyl halide in a proper solvent in the presence of an alkali.
