In the press section of a papermaking machine, a continuous belt (6) is passed through the pressure gap between a shoe press and a shoe press roller. The belt is a non-stretch and tensile drive for at least part of the press drive system. The drive belt (6) width at least matches the width of the fibre web, and is of material impermeable to water with a reinforcement along the line of belt travel of carbon fibres, aramid or glass fibres, metal wires and the like, or it is a metal belt. The belt (6) can also be a water-permeable blanket.
