PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing an oligomer of anα-olefin which is capable of concentrating a polymer as a by-product and a catalyst component and separating them from each other in an oligomerization reactor by oligomerizing anα-olefin in an oligomerization reactor in the presence of a chromium-based polymn. catalyst and a reaction solvent. SOLUTION: A chromium compd. (A), a nitrogen-contg. compd. (B), an alkylaluminum compd. (C), and a halogen-contg. compd. (D) are combined in a component (A)/component (B)/component (C)/component (D) molar ratio of 1:(1 to 50):(1 to 200):(1 to 50) to obtain a chromium-based catalyst. Anα-olefin is fed into an oligomerization reactor contg. the above chromium-based catalyst and a reaction solvent, followed by oligomerization under conditions of TΔ105 deg.C [wherein T represents the reaction temp. ( deg.C)] and P>0.5T-15 [wherein P represents reaction pressure (kg/cm<1> )] for 1min to 20hr.
