In a composite body consisting of a substrate (12) with one or more coating layers (13-16) of carbides, nitrides and/or carbonitrides of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb and/or Ta and/or of Al2O3 or ZrO2, the single layer or the outermost layer (16) consists of a 2-6 mu m thick ZrCN layer. Preferably, when a multilayer coating is provided, the layer (15) below the ZrCN layer (16) is a /-2 (preferably /- 3) mu m thick Al2O3 and/or ZrO2 layer and the total thickness of these layers (15, 16) is 5-10 mu m.
