The method involves bringing the exhaust gas that is supplied to the turbine (7) to a higher temperature level through an additional combustion of fuel, to increase the engine braking performance. The fuel is injected into the exhaust system, and ignited. A bypass conduit (3) with a fuel injector (6) is located in front of the turbine in the exhaust system (1). The bypass has a shut-off element (4). The bypass contains a flame glow plug (5) for use with diesel fuel.
