PURPOSE: To simplify the sheet pile preparation in a sheet processing machine by catching a transport pallet placed on a sheet pile by an operating device, lifting it from the sheet pile, feeding it from a pile area, turning it sidewise and placing it on a pallet storage part. CONSTITUTION: A pile converting device 1 comprises a base 2 and a turnably arranged support arm 3. The support arm 3 is provided with two abutting plates 4 which are slidable in the longitudinal direction to tighten the sheet pile 5 between the abutting plates 4 and the support arm 3. The abutting plates 4 are turnable from the horizontal position to the perpendicular position by the support arm 3, the sheet pile at the preparing position is compressed in the vertical direction by the abutting plates 4 in a turnable manner from the perpendicular position to the horizontal position. The sheet pile 5 is tightened and tilted together with a transport pallet 6, the transport pallet 6 is released and gripped by a gripper of an operating device 8 and removed, and the sheet pile 5 is placed on a system pallet 7.
