A toothpaste composition is provided which contains silica xerogel having a BET specific surface ranging from 600 to 800 m2/g, a refraction coefficient ranging from 1.42 to 1.47 and a oil absorption of not more than 130 cc/100g as abrasive, and a polyol as wetting agent. The toothpaste composition is not only transparent and excellent in fluidity but also well balanced among storage stability, abrasiveness and retainability in a toothbrush.
