The invention relates to a monitoring AOM cell (M) assisted method enabling continuous intrasystem determination of bit errors occurring in ATM useful cells on an ATM transmission link (5) wherein monitoring AOM cells are transmitted together with ATM useful cells (N) via an ATM transmission link (5). According to a known method only monitoring OAM cells (Meg) that are transmitted without error via the ATM network are taken into account to determine bit errors in ATM useful cells with the selected address in the cell head. In order to be able to determine almost all bit errors in ATM useful cells with the selected address in the cell head, the invention proposes that monitoring OAM cells recognized as having been transmitted defectively (Mes) should be corrected and converted into error-free monitoring OAM cells (Mek) and these monitoring OAM cells (Mek) are taken into account in order to determine bit errors occurring in ATM useful cells received.
