Grinding crankpins 56 of a crankshaft 54 in which a grinding wheel 40 is advanced and retracted under computer control so as to follow the planetary motion of the crankpin, wherein the crankshaft is rotated by a drive unit 46,54 via a coupling (Fig 7) which is torsionally rigid in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the crankshaft but which is readily deformable in other planes to accommodate for misalignment and offset so as to decouple the crankshaft from the drive other than to transmit pure rotation to the crankshaft. The coupling surrounds the headstock 106 and comprises laminated discs in the form of thin shim-like steel rings 114,116, the coupling being secured to the flange of a crankshaft by jaws 102,104. |
