PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce ethylbenzene for a raw material of a polymer in high yield and high selectivity by using an industrially advantageous low feeding molar ratio of benzene to ethylene. SOLUTION: This method for producing ethylbenzene by using an upflow type reaction vessel with a fixed bed in the presence of a catalyst containing a zeolite β is applied by (1) reacting the ethylene in the condition having ethylene bubble at the entrance of the lower part of the catalyst when charging the ethylene, (2) recovering the product liquid from a top part of the reaction vessel and simultaneously discharging a fraction consisting essentially of the unreacted benzene, (3) lowering a temperature at the entrance to a temperature >=50 deg.C below the maximum end-point temperature of the catalyst layer, (4) setting the molar ratio of a benzene ring to a ethyl group to 1-3, (5) further setting temperature profile of the catalyst layer to 30-200 deg.C entrance temperature and 170-250 deg.C end-point temperature, (6) regulating the partial pressure of the fraction discharged from the upper part of the reaction vessel as a vapor to 5-20kg/cm<2> G and (7) recycling and supplying the fraction consisting essentially of the unreacted benzene from (2) to (1). |
