The lifting appliance is for tree trunks suspended via a sling cable from a carrier connected to traction and reset cables. The carrier (2) has a retainer (5) for the sling cable (1). The retainer forms a sliding guide, which is open at one end, and extends in direction of transportation. One end of the sling cable is connected to the carrier, while the other end has a retainer head (6) wound around the load and then drawn through an intermediate ring (7) fastened to the sling cable. The open end of the sliding guide may be locked by a finger (8), which is actuated by a lever.
