PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high sensitivity and high contrast and a pure silver black tone even in rapid processing by allowing a silver halide emulsion to satisfy specified conditions and spectrally sensitizing the emulsion by a specified sensitizing dye. SOLUTION: The silver halide emulsion comprises silver halide grains of a cubic system having a silver iodide content of 0.1-1.0mol% and a (100) face proportion of 80-98%, and an iridium compound content of 1×10<-8> -1×10<-5> mol/ mol and an azaindene compound content of <=1mmol per 1mol of silver, and the emulsion is spectrally sensitized by one of the sensitizing dyes represented by the formula in which each of Z1 and Z2 is a nonmetallic atomic group necessary to complete an optionally substituted benzothiazole or benzoselenazole ring or the like; each of R1 and R2 is an optionally substituted alkyl group; X<-> is a counter ion; and (n) is 1 or 2 and when intramolecular salt is formed, (n) is 1.
