PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the wavelength converter which easily makes a phase matching wavelengthλpm coincide with a wavelengthλres of the fundamental waves being generated. SOLUTION: The light beams generated by an optical amplifier 3 are supplied to a wavelength converting element 1 as pump light beams through an optical fiber 5. The element 1 generates the light beams having the frequency (the 2nd harmonics) which is the double frequency of the pump light beams (the fundamental frequency). An optical coupler 2 outputs the 2nd harmonics components among the light beams from the element 1 and the fundamental frequency components are supplied to a wavelength variable filter 4. The filter 4 limits the band of the supplied fundamental wave components and the components are fed back to the amplifier 3.
