Pressurised gas and water pipe shutoff seal

The tension is applied by a disc (10,12) eccentrically carried on a shaft (14) to rotate at a tangent to the guide rod (2). A sleeve (6) between the disc and shutoff seal (4) can move axially along the rod. The interval between the disc rims (44,46) and seal can be varied by twisting the discs round the shaft so the sleeve is pressed optionally against the shutoff seal. The shaft is fixed in a radial hole (16) through the rod so the discs rotate on the shaft or vice versa, with discs fixed and the shaft rotatable. The second disc (12) symmetrical to the disc on the opposing side of the rod is also mounted on the shaft so that with both discs (10,12) joined rigidly to the shaft the discs necessarily rotate in synchronism when turned. Each disc has a grip bar (22) and the shutoff seal consists of a deformable elastomer sphere, roller, cone or pin.
