The unit is for aerating and ventilating the interior of a railway carriage (10). It is formed by an air feed unit (22) located on the roof (16), and at least one exhaust opening let into the floor (14). The exhaust opening has an air-penetrable cover and is connected to a air passage (30) located beneath the floor and formed as a shroud which is in communication with the outside air by a side opening. Several exhaust openings may be provided and are located beneath the passenger seats (18).
