Staples are urged by resilient tongues into a channel inside a nose cap at the front end of a tubular shaft and then forced out of the cap. Staples are fed into the open rear end of a tubular shaft only immediately before they are needed, with their open side facing towards the front end of the shaft. A nose cap which can be moved along the shaft is provided at the shaft front end. A channel with the same cross-section as the top of the staple is provided in the front section of the nose. The channel is linked to a wedge-shaped section that becomes a tubular section in which the shaft can be moved in a linear direction. One or more (preferably two) tongues at the front end of the shaft are resiliently urged against the inside of the wedge-shaped and tubular sections when the shaft is in the rear position. Pressing the shaft into the nose cap bends the tongues towards the central axis through the shaft, assisted by the wedge-shaped section, forcing them into contact with the top of the staple, pushing it into the channel and then out of it. |
