This invention concerns a folding machine and a process for automatically folding a folding box out of a pre-grooved carton blank. The folding machine according to the invention has: at least one alignment device (5) for aligning the carton blank in a predetermined position in a positioning plane; at least one flap for pre-folding (8) is associated with each flap (113) of the carton blank, whereby the flaps for pre-folding (8) which lift the flaps (13) from the positioning plane are displaceable in the positioning plane; at least one fixing device (6) for retaining the carton blank; at least one positioning flap (9, 10) associated with each side wall (112) of the carton blank, which is displaceable in the positioning plane; and at least one connecting device - one for each flap - for connecting the flaps (113) with the corresponding side walls.
