PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method excellent in catalytic activity, capable of suppressing demethylation reaction, disproportionation reaction and intermolecular transfer reaction and not reducing catalytic activity for many hours in a method for isomerizing dimethylnaphthalene. SOLUTION: A mixture which comprises >=80wt.% of dimethylnaphthalene and has the content of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene smaller than the thermodynamic equilibrium concentration of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene to the total amount of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, 1,5-dimethylnaphthalene and 1,6-dimethylnaphthalene is isomerized in a vapor or liquid phase at 250-350 deg.C by using a catalyst having the silica alumina ratio of 10-100 and consisting essentially of a hydrogen type mordenite in which 20-60% of an exchangeable cation part is exchanged with sodium. |
