A novel heterocyclic compound which is either one represented by the formula (I): (I) {wherein R1 represents hydrogen or C1-6 alkyl; R2 represents hydrogen, -CO-C(R4)=C(R4)-R5 (wherein R4 is hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl and R5 is C4-8 alkyl, C2- 8 alkenyl, etc.), etc.; Y represents a group represented by (II) [wherein X is oxygen or sulfur; R7 has the same meaning as R4; R 8 is R10-C(R9) =C(R9)- (wherein R9 has the same meaning as R4 and R10 is C3-6 alkyl, etc.), etc.; R14 has the same meaning as R4; and R15 represents aryl, etc.]; Y-(CH2)n-O- is bonded to the 6- or 7-positon carbon atom of the tetrahydroisoquinoline skeleton; and n is an integer of 1 to 4} or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The compound (I) is useful as an antihyperglycemic agent, antihyperlipemic agent, insulin resistance ameliorant, diabetes remedy, remedy for complications of diabetes, glucose tolerance insufficiency ameliorant, antiarteriosclerotic agent, antiobestic agent, anti-inflammatory agent, preventive/remedy for diseases attributable to PPAR, and preventive/remedy for X syndrome.
