The machine has a chassis hitched to the tractor and supported on two or more wheels which are spaced apart. A shaft (7) at right angles to the travel direction and parallel to the grass surface turns in the chassis. The shaft has blades at right-angles to it at intervals in the peripheral direction and penetrating below the grass so as to lift earth out. At one particular position on the shaft the knives are joined to a ring (28) turning on the shaft and which is spring-loaded against a second ring fixed to the latter, friction material being accommodated between the rings. The first ring can be secured by bolts to a thrust ring on the opposite side of the second ring, the bolts passing outside the latter. Compression springs on the bolts thrust the first and second rings against each other, and friction material is also accommodated between the thrust and second rings (29,26).
