A method of marking a surface of an ophthalmic lens (20) by radiation of a laser beam (LO) emitted from an excimer laser source (4). The method is characterized in that KrF is used as a laser medium. Additionally, a method of making a surface of an ophthalmic lens (20) by radiation of a laser beam through masks (10) is disclosed. The method is characterized in that the laser beam (LO) has a wavelength in the ultraviolet region and that the masks (10) are composed of a mark pattern forming mask and a mesh-like mask.
