PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound useful as a coupler for diazo compounds. SOLUTION: This new compound is represented by formula I (R1 is an alkyl, phenyl, p-tolyl, mesityl; R2 is a 1-3C alkylene; M is H, an alkali metal), typically N-(2-hydroxyphenoxyethyl)-p-toluenesulfon-amide. The compound of formula I is prepared by reaction of N-(halogenoalkyl)sulfonamide of formula II [R5 is an alkyl, a (substituted) phenyl, (substituted) naphthyl; R6 is H, an alkyl, phenyl; R7 is an alkylene; X is a halogen] with 1,2-dihydroxybenzene in the presence of a least one selected from a quaternary ammonium salt of formula III (R8 is an alkyl, benzyl; R9 to R11 are each a lower alkyl; Y is a halogen, OH), an iodine compound and metal oxides. |
