Disclosed is a particulate catalyst for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions in the form of particles having a size of at least 0.8 mm comprising a transition metal or a compound thereof dispersed on a porous support material. Said catalyst particles comprise at least 35 wt.% of the total transition metal, and the surface area of the transition metal in said catalyst is at least 110 m/g transition metal, and the tapped bulk density of a bed of catalyst particles is at least 0.7 g/ml, wherein the porous carrier material has a bimodal pore size distribution, and the material of the porous support has a pore volume of at least 1.0 ml/g.
