The method is for operating a cable installation which transmits high power through a single wire high voltage (HV) cable (10). The installation has integrated cooling channels (4), with at least one pair of additional external coolant pipes (20,30). There is a cascade type subdivision of the line into sections. The method involves maintaining the hydraulic pressure at the end of each section, up to the penultimate section, to be at the pressure of the last section, by using pressure reducing valves (32). The pressure is also adjusted by the stepped diameter of the coolant pipes and the different lengths of the sections. The coolant is force cooled and there is a refrigeration unit (25) in the circuit.
