PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily prevent a dimming defect such as hunting caused by interference between an element shutter function and the automatic dimming function of a light source with simple configuration. SOLUTION: An electronic endoscope 1 is provided with a solid-state image pickup element 3 having the element shutter function for controlling the quantity of incident light corresponding to a control signal from a CCU 6. The CCU 6 connected with the electronic endoscope 1 has a cable connection discrimination circuit 21 for automatic dimming for discriminating the connection of a cable 20 for automatic dimming for connection between a light source unit 7 and a connector 19 of the CCU 6 and when the cable 20 for automatic dimming is connected, the automatic dimming of a light source is performed by automatic light source dimming control circuit 18 while stopping the operation of an element shutter control circuit 17 but when this cable is not connected, automatic dimming is performed by the element shutter function while operating the element shutter control circuit 17.
