The motor vehicle has an IC engine (2) or a hybrid drive arrangement, and electronic control unit integrated with an activator (15) and a gearbox (4). The control unit after a driver side activation of the control unit, receives and processes a sensor signal from a gear identification sensor (31), which detects a neutral setting applied in the gearbox. The control unit with the introduction of a neutral setting applied in the gearbox, disengages the torque transmission system (3), and imparts a starter clear signal for the starting of the engine. With the sensor not detecting a positioning of the gear lever (30) in a neutral setting in the gearbox, a clear signal for the starting of the engine is not imparted.
