A socket contact (21) for mating with a pin contact (27) in an electrical connector (22). The socket contact (21) is provided with an electrical component-attaching section (158) integrally formed with a receptacle section (84) for providing an electrically efficient design. The receptacle section (84) has a centrally disposed opening (111) therein having an arc-arresting end portion (93) with a diameter (106) smaller than the diameter (36) of the pin (27) so that the end portion (93) initially engages the pin (27) and establishes an electrical connection between the pin contact (27) and the socket contact (21). The socket contact (21) is expandable so that the centrally disposed opening (111) can enlarge to accommodate the pin (27) passing therethrough into the bore (85).
