A device for cleaning liquids consists of a filter cartridge located in the floor of a liq container. The cartridge contains a cleaning material and is closed at the top and bottom by strainers. The following novel features are included: (a) the lower outlet part (B) of the cartridge (3) tapers at a more acute angle than the upper part (A), and (b) the strainer at the lower outlet face (7) of the cartridge extends upwards by a certain distance from this face. Pref. the outlet strainer is curved outward and upward. The tapering section begins at about half the height of the cartridge, and the taper may be symmetric or asymmetric about the vertical axis of the cartridge. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used principally for filtering water - e.g. water intended for use in making tea. Blocking of the filter cartridge by compaction of the cleaning material in the lower part of the cartridge is prevented by a simple constructional alteration to the filter design.
