摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically anisotropic film with which a desired alignment structure is obtd. by a simple method and which has excellent optical compensation performance and a liquid crystal display device which is formed by using this film and has an excellent visual field angle characteristic. SOLUTION: The ridge-like reggedness of the optically anisotropic material having a base material having the ridge-like ruggedness on a surface and a layer contg. an optically anisotropic compd. is constituted by periodically forming valley lines 2 of recesses and ridge lines 1 of projecting parts in nearly parallel. The average value of the periods is <=200 to >=0.5&mu;m. The average value of the difference in the height between the valley lines 2 of the recesses and the ridge line 1 of the projecting parts of the ridge-like ruggedness is <=5 to >=0.3 times the average value of the periods of the ridge-like ruggedness. The shape at the section of the ridge-like ruggedness when the section is cut at the plane perpendicular to the ridge lines 1 of the projecting parts is the shape connected by combinations of straight lines and/or curved. The one projection line when the distance between the ridge lines 1 and the valley lines 2 on both side thereof are projected onto the base material surface is >=2 times the other projection line. An optically anisotropic compd. layer is formed directly or via >=1 intermediate layers on the base material having the ridge-like ruggedness.
