The method involves using a video camera and a computer to record road incidents to produce a mathematical model. Points on the road edge mark the course of the road are determined from the video pictures and used in the method as measurement points in defined measurement cells. The speed is determined by measurement cell comparison of the actual with the previously taken picture using a parameter set. A horizontal comparison is then made of areas of the picture and an estimate of the model parameters. A correction is then made in the region of the horizontal location. Finally the model parameters are estimated.
