To compensate for non-linear signal distortion caused by the non-linear characteristic of an electrooptical converter, a dither signal is added at the transmitting end to the electric useful signal and is removed once more from the electric received signal at the receiving end following optoelectrical conversion. A high-frequency sinusoidal signal, which is suppressed once more at the receiving end through low-pass filtering, is preferably used as the dither signal.
