The invention concerns compounds of formula (I) wherein R stands for (substituted) alkyl or (substituted) cycloalkyl which are suitable as intermediate products in the production of herbicidal sulfonylureas. According to the invention, the compounds (I) are produced by (a) diazotising a compound of formula (II) in the presence of an H+X- acid, wherein X- stands for an equivalent to an anion, to produce new compounds (diazonium salts ) of the formula (III), (b) reacting the compound of formula (III) in the presence of iodide ions to produce the compound (IV) and (c) reacting the compound of formula (IV) with an isocyanate of formula (V) R - N = C = O, wherein R is defined as in formula (I), to produce the compound of formula (I).
