[Class 141] [See also Groups IX and VIII] A composite thread S comprising a rubber strand 1 and one or more relativelv inextensible filaments 2 of cotton, silk, rayon or derivatives of cellulose, bound together by one or more helically-wound layers of cotton, silk, wool, &c. 3, 4, is used in forming a fabric, for example by knitting or weaving. Thus, it may form laid-in threads S, Fig. 13, in a fabric knitted from a textile strand 5 or a fabric may as shown in Fig. 15 be knitted entirely from the threads. The filaments 2 limit the stretchability of the rubber during the manufacture of the fabric, but when this is subsequently heavily tensioned, the filaments 2 are ruptured into fragments 2<x> which therefore no longer limit the stretch of the strands 1 and these become normally elastic. The strand 1 mav be of extruded rubber or be cut from a sheet and it may be stretched whilst being covered so as to have a limited contraction as shown by Figs. 9 and 10. It may be of circular square or elliptical section and may be in the form of a ribbon, Fig. 5, bent to enclose the strand 2. It may be used in the garter strip 8, Fig. 16, of a stocking top T, and be knitted in by either of the methods shown in Figs. 13 and 15.
