The transmission has an IC engine, such as a diesel engine (5) driving a hydraulic pump (4) which powers at least two hydraulic motors (2,3) linked by a common axle, or mounted together. One set of valves (6) connects the motors to the hydraulic supply or isolates the motors from same. A second set of valves (7) in series with the first set, controls the volumes of the motors by selecting the number of pistons activated in the motors. The different permutations of the motor settings and the fluid supply settings provides eight gear ratios if two motor systems are used. The two sets of control valves are connected to a processor control (8). This ensures a smooth torque change when changing gear ratios.
