The embroidery or lockstitch or sewing machine, with a number of thread bobbins, has a suction jet (11) on the opposite side of the needle (3) to the thread carrier system (8), to draw the thread (7) through the needle eye (16). Also claimed is a thread change action, where the thread (7) in current use at the needle (3) is cut at the fabric, and the thread is withdrawn from the needle (3). A holder is moved to present the end of the new thread (7) to a position in front of the injector jet of the thread carrier (8). Compressed air blows the new thread (7) into the injector jet and through the carrier tube (8) and the thread delivery lever to the needle eye (16). An underpressure is developed at a suction jet (11) to draw the end of the thread through the needle eye (16).
